IP Address

IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique string of numbers and decimals assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. This address serves as a device’s identification and location address on the network, enabling it to send and receive data from other devices. Each IP address must be unique within its network, ensuring accurate routing of information across the internet. There are two primary types of IP addresses: IPv4, which is based on a 32-bit numbering system, and IPv6, introduced to provide a virtually limitless number of addresses due to its 128-bit system, addressing the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses.

The importance of IP addresses cannot be overstated. They are crucial for the seamless operation of the internet, allowing for the precise routing of data packets to and from devices, regardless of their location. Without IP addresses, the internet as we know it would not function, as they provide the fundamental addressing and identification mechanism that underpins all online communication. The operation of IP addresses revolves around two main processes: assignment and routing. Once assigned, internet data packets are routed through a complex network of routers and switches, using the IP address to make routing decisions.
